Magazine Art Journal


Welcome back!  I hope you are having a wonderful week! 

I have had a few questions about my magazine art journal the past few days, so here we go!  First of all, I cannot take any credit for this idea.  Over a year ago I saw someone use a magazine for an art journal so I bought a UK Glamour at the airport because it was a cute 6x8 size.  I left it on my shelf for awhile until my wonderful friend Joyce (you can see her work linked to that post) showed us her huge daily journal that was made out of two magazines and a bunch of regular lined paper.


I have always liked to write in a journal, but since Art Journaling I have been doing very little of it.  I could not get used to plain old writing, even in a fancy journal.  A litght bulb went off when I saw Joyce with hers.  I could combine the writing and some art!!


Joyce showed us how to incorporate lined paper as signatures into the journal using white glue and tape.  Yes, the binding of the magazine takes a beating, but I love the rough look!  As you can see from the first picture I used a pretty duct tape along the binding after covering with a cool faux snake skin paper, the duct tape really helps the spine expand.


I am having fun in this journal, creating a mess and trying new things, and writing a whole bunch in between!

    Paula, could you post a video of how to insert the paper signatures? what a fantastic idea! I think that this would also work great for adolescents, as they love magazines already!!

    What a great way to recycle all those magazines that I have. Can I add my request to Kelley's of a quick tutorial about how to put the signatures in?

    I love this idea! I cut things out of magazines for collage. I never thought about using the magazine itself. Now I will have to add this to my list of new things to try!

    I'd love to see more on this idea too - I like working on heavier paper so I don't have to use so much gesso and paint to add body and stop the curling. How do you get over that problem? And do you remove some pages to give more room if you're inserting others? So many questions!

    I love the idea! I agree with ArtfulLee and sugest a tutorial I would like to see that also. This gives me a couple of ideas to try my self I just decluttered my magazines last night. Thanks!

    hi paula. i just watched your video on the "reverse stencil". i was just amazed. it was so beautiful and thanks so much for posting it. i would love to know where you get some of your stencils. i haven't seen anything like them in the stores in town. thanks for sharing your talent.

    That's such a cool idea. I also love the idea of using an old harcover book as a journal. I saw some very pretty ones in an upcycling altered art book but am too intimidated to try it out.
