Reflecting on my Art Journaling Beginnings

Hi all!  I uploaded my first tutorial vids early today on Youtube.  You can check them out here:  My Channel  I have lots of ideas swirling in my head. I just want to share this passion I have, so art journaling can hopfully effect others as much as it has enriched my life.

This got me thinking about how I got started.  Here is my very first page, from July of last year.  My journaling has changed so much in a year, it amazes me to look back.

First page

As I've said before, I am a scrapbooker.  It was reading Somerset's Art Journaling magazine that pushed me to research the art form.  This lead me to the WONDERFUL Samantha Kira.  Her videos on Youtube were the catalyst for my art journaling.  Watching her vids totally changed my life and helped me realize that I could do this too.  I've incorporated a lot of things she's shared into my own "style", and to this day I follow her like a lost puppy (hey, it was better than Stalker, lol).  All kidding aside, this girl ROCKS.  She has a new class up over at the Art Journaling Ning called True To You.  It's definately worth the price, and seriously people, she is super talented and super sweet.  Please check her out and show her some Love.

I look forward to another year of learning and sharing.   I am excited to see where my art will go next.  I really hope you check out my new vids, and give me some feedback.  It was really fun to do.  :)

(PS, for those who have been following, I got a message a few weeks ago that my article int AJ magazine was bumped out of the July issue and will now be in January.  Just another reason why May was so hard for me.  I look forward to January!)

  1. Sorry about the July issue! And I have now bookmarked your you tube channel!!

  2. Oh man, so bummed about the Journaling article!! I was really looking forward to it. I went thru that a couple of years ago, when they said I was to be published and then the mag came out and I was not in it. I know that heartbreak siter!!! Much love, and I will be looking for you in January!!!

  3. O my!
I didn't know you've only been journaling for a year!!! You go! I sooo love your work!
I'm sorry to hear that your article got bumped, but it will be well worth it when it comes in January. You know I'm getting one!

  4. Now that's what I call making lemonade out of lemons! While you're laid up mending you get a chance to create these great videos! Way to go girl!
Well, it sucks we have to wait until January now to read your article and see the pictures, but it does give a Canadian winter a bright spot to look forward to :-)

  5. Oh!!! I'm so glad my videos have helped you, girl! *G* And one of the lessons in the new workshop shows you how to "scrapbook" in your art journal, so it should be really helpful for you!

  6. You are such an awesome so talented....I truly love your videos...and yes, Kira is simply fabulous!!

  7. Great videos Paula! Your camera man is a natural. :)

  8. I also love Samantha Kira. What magazine are you talking about? I will have to get it in January. Hugs-Jamie
PS-that cat at the bottom cracks me up! :)

  9. Samantha also got me started art journaling. I went online looking for journal prompts for just plain old journaling and that's when I found her and discovered art journaling. She is really sweet, too. I have one of her handmade journals and I love it.

  10. Hi Paula,
Just thought I'd let you know that I am following your vids and took a picture after the Part 2 demystifying one and part 1 and 2 of you starting a page. I forgot the added gesso step and scrapbook paper pieces with black ink so the picture won't show that part. I chose two scrapbook papers and they are now inked and drying before I put the gesso on! Happy happies.

  11. I almost passed out when you said you've only been journaling for a year!! I've been at it much longer than you and I have definitely NOT made as much progress! Now I'm really jealous!!

Sorry you got bumped back to January but now I have something to look forward to for next year!!

  12. Hey, I got bumped out to January too! Se you in the January issue. Just been watching your vids on U-Tube. You rock! Your journaling style is so different to mine but I'm sooo going to have a go at following your vid. I'll let you know what I come up with. Thanks for the inspiration. :-)
